Effect of coenzyme Q10 administration on endothelial function and extracellular superoxide dismutase in patients with ischaemic heart disease: a double-blind, randomized controlled study

Abstract: Improvements in the ED relaxation and endothelium-bound ecSOD activity might be related to CoQ(10) capability of enhancing endothelial functionality by counteracting nitric oxide oxidation. The enhancement of peak VO(2) and of O(2) pulse is likely due to the bioenergetic effect of CoQ(10); on the other end, the improved VO(2) could also depend on the observed enhanced peripheral endothelial function.

“…In a randomized, double-blind, crossover study, CoQ 10 supplementation significantly improved brachial artery FMD in statin-treated T2D patients with LDLcholesterol <2.5mmol/l and ED [234]. In patients with CAD (20% with diabetes and 80% statin-treated), CoQ 10 supplementation improved ecSOD levels and brachial artery FMD, indicating that the beneficial effects of CoQ 10 on endothelial function are in part related to improvements in local vascular oxidative stress [235]. -Fibrates and antioxidants.…”

“…The same was the target of co-enzyme Q 10 action. It ameliorated bioenergetics parameters, increased the activity of extracellular superoxide dismutase (EC-SOD) and endothelium-related dilatation after one month of oral dose (300 mg per day) by the patients with coronary artery disease [14]. Clinical trials of food (diet) antioxidants (vitamins E, C, polyphenols, carotenoids/lycopine, beta-carotene/, co-enzyme Q 10 ) are actively held now, aiming at prevention of atherogenic oxidation of low-density lipoproteins and oxidative damage of endothelium.…”

“…An increase in hepatic SOD and anti-ROS capacity in broilers was observed by CoQ10 supplementation (Geng et al, 2004b). The supplementation of CoQ10 increases the SOD activity by antagonizing Nitric Oxide (NO) inactivation; thereby making more NO availability for the biological function which leads to extracellular SOD gene-expression (Tiano et al, 2007). The reduced glutathione and glutathione peroxidase activity were also increased by CoQ10 at 20 mg kgG 1 (Lakomkin et al, 2005;Huang et al, 2011;Gopi, 2013).…”
