Effect of Coenzyme Q10 on Th1/Th2 Paradigm in Females with Idiopathic Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

Abstract: CoQ10 was effective in maintaining the immune homeostasis by reducing the proportion of IFN-γ-producing T cells and proinflammatory cytokine levels in the RPL pregnant females. This property could be attributed to the capability of CoQ10 in reducing oxidative stress by decreasing ROS production.

“…Tim-3 and its ligand Gal-9 interaction initiates intracellular calcium influx and suppresses Th1 and Th17 cells (137)(138)(139). The Tim-3 blockade induced increased Th1 cytokines at the maternal-fetal junction, and immune tolerance was disrupted (140). Contrarily, Tim-3 can also keep decidual stromal cells from inflammatory damages and TLR-mediated apoptosis by enhancing Th2 immunity at the maternal-fetal junction (141,142).…”

“…In support of the role of disturbed immune milieu in pathogenesis and/or recurrence of PL, Talukdar et al (21) detected significantly decreased percentage of Thl cells with significantly decreased levels of IFN-y and TNF-a in the culture supernatant of peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) from RPL women and treated in vitro with CoQ10 than in untreated cells and attributed this effect to the capability of CoQ10 in reducing oxidative stress by decreasing reactive oxygen species production. Also, Ota et al (22) experimentally detected significantly decreased Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) expression on natural killer (NK) cells and significantly reduced production of TNF-a and IFN-y on incubation of NK cells of RPL women with di-hydroxy vitamin D3 through interference with nuclear factor-KB.…”

“…The Th2-type cytokine IL-4 is relevant to Alzheimer's disorders and protective against depression due to its ability to counter-regulate inflammation [54] and contribute to acquired stress resilience through BDNF-dependent neurogenesis [55]. Since the relationship between ubiquinol and IL-4 we uncovered suggests the relevance of the immune system in this feasibility step, further experiments should be performed using flow cytometry to identify the involvement of immune cell types in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) [56].…”
