Effect of Chronic Uremia on Plasma Lipids and the Aortic Accumulation of Cholesterol in Hypercholesterolemic Rabbits

Abstract: 14 rabbits were made uremic by extensive cauterization and subsequent removal of the contralateral kidney, resulting in a mean plasma creatinine concentration four times the value observed in a sham-operated control group. The animals were killed after 10 weeks of uremia. During the last 7 weeks the rabbits were fed an individually adjusted amount of cholesterol in order to maintain the same elevated level of plasma cholesterol in both groups. The triglyceride concentration was four times higher in the uremic … Show more

“…The cholesterol content of the rabbit aorta was found to be unaffected by CRF, in agreement with previous reports (Kamstrup et al 1980). The finding that the aortic content of cholesterol was also unaffected by methylprednisolone could be due to the moderate dosage and limited treatment period.…”

The rabbits were housed in individual cages and received daily 100 g of standard rabbit pellets (Boserup®; Faxe, Denmark), containing 3% fat, 1.2% Ca, 0.6% P and 0.2% Mg with 200 IU of vitamin D3 per 100 g. The rabbits had free access to tap water.…”
