Effect of chlorate on nitrification in longan plantation soil

Abstract: Potassium chlorate is widely used as an active substance for flower induction in longan plantation fields for the off-season production of fruits in northern Thailand. The effects of the application of chlorate on the mineralization of organic matter in soil, nitrification in soil and the number of culturable soil bacteria were examined. No effect or a very small effect of chlorate on the mineralization of organic matter and soil bacterial number was observed, whereas nitrification was significantly suppressed… Show more

“…To determine OURs for autotrophic AOB, NOB, and heterotrophic microorganisms, selective inhibitors (allylthiourea, ATU; NaClO 3 , ) were added sequentially . Total OUR (OUR t ) was determined in the absence of added inhibitors after adjusting initial NH 4 + –N concentration to 1500 mg/L (20 mL stock at 22.5 g of NH 4 + –N/L).…”

“…ClO 3 – is also a common byproduct from drinking water disinfection using NaClO or ClO 2 and wastewater treatment with electrochemical , or photochemical processes. , Upon entering the environment, ClO 3 – can adversely affect ecosystems. For instance, it exhibits high toxicity toward specific algal species in aquatic environments and can potentially suppress the nitrification process in soil . Human exposure to ClO 3 – through drinking water, dairy supply chain, and agricultural products can lead to various health effects, including thyroid dysfunction and methemoglobinemia .…”

“…However, the drawbacks of using potassium chlorate include the risk of combustion, lack of availability, and associated difficulties with transport and storage (Matsumoto et al 2007b). Its negative effects on the environment include the inhibition of nitrification (Sutigoolabud et al 2008) and groundwater pollution (Sutigoolabud et al 2004). This coincided with the period of climate change from 1909 to 2020, during which this study investigated the relationship between climate change and longan yield.…”
