Effect of chemical structure of bipyridinium salts as electron carrier on the visible-light induced conversion of CO2 to formic acid with the system consisting of water-soluble zinc porphyrin and formate dehydrogenase

Abstract: A B S T R A C TEffect of chemical structures of some 2,2 0 -bipyridinium salts (BP 2+ ) as the electron carrier molecules on the visible-light induced conversion of CO 2 to formic acid with the system consisting of water-soluble zinc tetraphneylporphyrin tetrasulfonate (ZnTPPS) and formate dehydrogenase (FDH) in the presence of triethanolamine (TEOA) as an electron donor molecule was investigated. Irradiation of a CO 2 saturated solution containing TEOA, ZnTPPS, BP 2+ and FDH with visible light resulted in pro… Show more

“…W-containing FoDH-catalyzed HCOO − oxidation occurs at the W center of the enzymes [36]. This reaction does not involve oxygen atom transfer: the product of HCOO − oxidation is CO 2 and not hydrogen carbonate, as was clearly demonstrated by the formation of 13 C 16 O 2 gas during the oxidation of 13 C-labeled formate in 18 O-enriched water [37]. The FoDH1-catalyzed CO 2 reduction seems to follow the reverse reaction mechanism.…”

“…TQ was synthesized according to a literature procedure [18]. Briefly, 2,2'-bipyridine (10 mmol) was dissolved in 300 mL of acetonitrile and then 1,3-dibromopropane (100 mmol) was added to this solution and the reaction mixture was refluxed for 48 h. The yellow precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with acetonitrile.…”

“…The resultant k cat value of the reduced form of DC 2+ is the lowest compared with the other viologen derivatives. In this study, the effect of the functional group (amino or carboxyl group) in the reduced form of viologen derivatives on the CO 2 reduction activity with FDH was revealed and this result is important for the development of viologen derivatives for improvement of CO 2 reduction activity . We expect that controlling catalytic activity through manipulation of functional groups in artificial co‐enzymes will be applied in other enzyme systems.…”
