Effect of Charcoal Filter on the Emergence from Sevoflurane Anesthesia in a Semi-Closed Rebreathing Circuit

Abstract: PurposeA charcoal filter attached within the anesthetic circuit has been shown to efficiently adsorb halothane or isoflurane, thus hastening anesthetic recovery in low or minimal flow system. This study was intended to demonstrate whether the charcoal filter enhances the recovery time from sevoflurane anesthesia using a semi-closed circuit system.Materials and MethodsThirty healthy patients scheduled for elective surgery under sevoflurane anesthesia were randomly assigned to the charcoal filter or control grou… Show more

“…The typical volatile anesthetics commonly used nowadays are sevoflurane and desflurane 10-13. Sevoflurane has the potential to adversely affect the kidney function because an inorganic fluoride ion from the defluorination of sevoflurane and compound A from reaction with carbon dioxide absorbent are associated with nephrotoxicity 14,15.…”

“…It is used for the acute management of poisoning caused by drugs or chemicals [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Activated charcoal has been known to adsorb volatile anesthetics, such as ether, trichloroethylene, halothane, methoxyflurane, isoflurane and sevoflurane [ 9 , 10 ]. It is used to adsorb volatile anesthetics in anesthesia research and practice.…”

“…As an adsorber, activated charcoal efficiently prevents atmospheric isoflurane contamination during isoflurane sedation [ 11 ]. Recently, the attachment of a charcoal filter to the anesthesia circuit shortened the extubation time and the time to eye opening without adverse effects [ 10 ]. Activated charcoal has been considered and tested in the preparation of anesthesia machines for patients with malignant hyperthermia [ 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…An artificial lung (5 L reservoir bag) was connected to a breathing circuit system ( Fig. 1 ) of an anesthetic machine (Primus, Dräger Medizintechnik GmbH, Lübeck, Germany) [ 6 ]. The study groups had no filter (a sham group with no anesthetic gas [n = 5] and a control group with anesthetic gas [n = 10]), a bacterial filter (SF 10C, Ace Medical, Seoul, Korea; n = 10) or a viral/bacterial filter (MF 10C, Ace Medical; n = 10) ( Fig.…”
