Effect of carrageenan on the histology of the bursa of fabricius and the humoral immune response to SalmonellaO antigen

Abstract: Bursal secretory cells have been studied with light and electron microscope after prolonged carrageenan treatment. Intravenous injected carrageenan decreased the number of secretory cells as early as 4 days after the first carrageenan administration. Degranulation of the secretory cells may have made it difficult to identify these cells. The discharge of granules from the secretory cells was indicated by the appearance of a large amount of extracellular substance on the cell surface. The carrageenan may have a… Show more

“…The adjuvant role of carrageenan challenge is also unclear; carrageenan has been found to inhibit macrophage-lymphocyte interactions (2), induce changes in gut epithelial glycoproteins (1), and accelerate the immunoglobulin M-immunoglobulin G switch after immunization with Salmonella sp. 0 antigen (16).…”

“…This novel cell shows a well-developed Golgi complex with secretory granules in control birds. Around the cell, there is a fine-flocculated substance ( Olah and Glick, 1986 , 1987 ). Based on these findings, we named this cell secretory cell.…”
