Effect of Carbon Nanotube-Metal Hybrid Particle Exposure to Freshwater Algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Abstract: We demonstrate for the first time the toxicity of carbon nanotube (CNT) metal hybrids on freshwater algae. Carbon nanotube-silver (CNT-Ag) and platinum hybrids (CNT-Pt) were synthesized and exposed to Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (C. reinhardtii), and their toxicity was compared to the pure metal salts. Interactions between CNT-metal and algae were studied using electron microscopy and it was observed that while outer membrane of the algal cell was damaged as a result of Ag+ toxicity from pure Ag, the CNT-Ag only… Show more

“…Previous literature indicates that both pristine SWNT and COOH-SWNT are thermally stable below 600 ˚C. [20,21] Upon heating samples to this temperature and accounting for the removal of impurities such as excess solvent below 150 ˚C, we observe a 81.6% loss in mass. Based on previous literature, we attributed this mass loss to the combustion of amorphous carbon in the sample (Figure 2a).…”

“…To probe the toxicity of the Au NPs on the growth of living cells [64,65] and ascertain whether Au NPs have any harmful effects on the viability of the algal cells, absorbance at 750 nm was recorded at three different concentrations (6, 50, and 100 μg mL À1 ) of AuNPs (Figure 3c). [66] In photosynthetic cells, the light-absorbing pigments absorb light a specific wavelength.…”

“…Based on anti-algae 47 and bactericidal functions 48,49 of Ag + , P-C-Ag + can effectively solve the deterioration and decomposition of ordinary photothermal materials in the practical application process, and can alleviate the pollution of water, improve the water environment. The mechanism of combined inhibition of Escherichia coli and algae is the same as previous, which mainly relies on the anti-algal and bactericidal functions of Ag + .…”

[47][48][49] In this work, we supervised the water quality change with the three samples. The P, P-Ag + and P-C-Ag + samples were put into the natural water.…”
