Effect of Calcination Conditions on Co3O4 Catalysts in the Total Oxidation of Toluene and Propane

Abstract: Co3O4 catalysts were prepared via carbonate precipitation and subsequent calcination under specific conditions. The different catalysts were characterized as received using several techniques and tested in the total oxidation of toluene or propane. Calcination at low temperature or under dynamic conditions resulted in Co3O4 catalysts with small crystallite sizes and large surface areas. The performances of the Co3O4 catalysts appeared to be closely related to the low-temperature reducibility. The best catalyst… Show more

“…From this point of view, it becomes evident that sharp and higher peak intensity in IC-700 signifies a larger crystalline size with minimal dislocation defects and reduced strain. 27 Whereas, IC-550 with a smaller crystalline size may possess more oxygen vacancies, point defects, or dislocation defects. 28 The formation of defectrich Co 3 O 4 in IC-550 can induce slight variations in distortion and electronic redistribution compared to more crystalline IC-700.…”

“…Although IC-550 and IC-700 show almost identical XRD patterns, there is a considerable difference in peak intensities. From this point of view, it becomes evident that sharp and higher peak intensity in IC-700 signifies a larger crystalline size with minimal dislocation defects and reduced strain . Whereas, IC-550 with a smaller crystalline size may possess more oxygen vacancies, point defects, or dislocation defects .…”

“…Cobalt (Co) is currently seen to be particularly promising due to numerous important properties like loosely bounded d-electrons, active sites, and effective electron trapping [24,25]. In addition to that, cobalt oxide has a narrow band gap, high surface area, exhibits strong light absorption, and has excellent electrical conductivity [26,27]. More carbon atoms can be attached to the active sites of the photocatalyst, increasing its stability and preventing the production of coke [28].…”
