Effect of butorphanol on visceral pain in patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Background Butorphanol slightly influences the respiratory and circulatory systems, has a better effect on relieving the discomfort caused by mechanical traction, and has a low incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Combined butorphanol and propofol may suppress postoperative visceral pain, which is avoidable in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Thus, we hypothesized that butorphanol could decrease the incidence of postoperative visceral pain in patients undergoing gastroscopy and col… Show more

“…Butorphanol is a mixed opioid receptor agonist and antagonist that acts on κ receptors 7 .The pharmacological attributes of Butorphanol, characterized by its mild impact on cardiopulmonary dynamics and demonstrated efficacy in attenuating mechanical traction-induced discomfort, culminate in an ameliorative effect on postoperative nausea and vomiting rates 8 . A trans-nasal dosage form of Butorphanol (Stadol nasal spray) was developed to avoid hepatic first pass metabolism, achieve rapid absorption, increase systemic bioavailability, and provide a convenient mode of administration.…”
