Zirconia ceramic is a popular trend in esthetic and restorative dentistry. Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems have been well developed to fabricate zirconia frameworks and restorations with acceptable mechanical properties. Zirconia ceramics have excellent optical characteristics; however, achieving optimal esthetic outcomes with zirconia-based restorations is still challenging due to multiple effective factors on the final color. These factors are different layers of a zirconia-based restoration and its underlying structures including: dental substrate, cement, zirconia coping, veneering ceramic, and glaze. Moreover, the laboratory procedure of these restorations' fabrication is another effective factor on the resultant color. Unpredictable esthetic results may be obtained without estimation of the role of each factor and its effect on the final color. This review discussed the color aspect of zirconia-based restorations according to these factors and based on the literature. In the past decade, investigators have been concerned with the shade reproduction with zirconia-based restorations; however, there are no sufficient clinical guidelines on how to reproduce the appearance of natural teeth with these restorations. Zirconia-based restorations have presented a new chance for accomplishing optimum esthetics. Nonetheless further investigations are needed on these restorations to establish clinical guidelines on esthetics.

Statement of problem. Optical properties of contemporary all ceramic restorations are influenced by background color and thickness has dearth of information. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the background color and thickness of zirconia reinforced glass ceramics on the optical properties compared to lithium disilicate glass ceramic. Materials and methods. Fifty six ceramics rectangular plates were made from zirconia reinforced glass ceramic and lithium disilicate glass ceramic plates (n=28). The dimensions of the plates were (14 x 12 mm). The plates of each group were divided into two subgroups of two different thicknesses 1.0, 1.5 mm (n=14). Again, specimens were divided into two divisions according to composite background shade into division (A2 and C3). The ceramic plates of each materials and thicknesses were optically connected with drop of distilled water to either two composite background shades. The color change ΔE between ceramic-composite assembly and ceramic plates was measured for all tested group. The data were analyzed with 3-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni's post-hoc test (α= 0.05). Results. ANOVA revealed that background color, ceramic type and thickness had a statistically significant effect on mean ΔL (p<0.05). The interaction between the three variables was not statistically significant (p=0.968). Conclusion. Zirconia reinforced lithium silicate ceramics could decrease the effect of color change of dark background more significantly than lithium disilicate glass ceramic.

Bulgular: En düşük ΔE değeri grup 1'de gözlendi. Grup 2'de, grup 3'e kıyasla daha yüksek ΔE değeri elde edilse de her iki grup arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark bulunamadı.Sonuç: Yarı saydam baz ve yarı saydam katalizör karışımı sonucunda klinik olarak kabul edilebilir bir renk değişimi gözlenirken, B1 baz, A3 katalizör ve A1 baz, A3 katalizör karışımları ise klinik olarak kabul edilebilir değerlerin üzerinde renk değişimi göstermiştir. Rezin simanın rengi simanın renk stabilitesi üzerinde kısmen etkili olmuştur. Objective:The aim of this study was to determine effect of shade selection on resin cement's color stability. MaterialsandMethods:Ten resin cement samples in dimensions of 10 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness for each group [group 1: Translucent base and translucent catalyst, group 2: Bleach XL (B1) base and yellow (A3) catalyst, group 3: White (A1) base and A3 catalyst] totally 30 samples were prepared. Color coordinates of each sample were recorded after polymerization and 5000 thermal cycles. Color variation (ΔE) was calculated for each sample and statistical analyses were performed. Results:The lowest ΔE values were obtained for group 1. Group 2 showed higher ΔE values than group 3 however there were no statistical difference. Conclusion:Translucent base and translucent catalyst mixture showed clinically acceptable color stability while B1 base and A3 catalyst and A1 base and A3 catalyst mixtures did not show clinically acceptable color stability.
