Effect of bowel obstruction on stage IV colorectal cancer

Abstract: Abstract. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with a high mortality rate, particularly among patients with advanced-stage disease complicated by bowel obstruction. The present study aimed to investigate the value of different surgical procedures and potential predictors of survival for patients with stage IV CRC, with or without bowel obstruction. Between August, 1994 and December, 2005, a total of 2,950 CRC patients were diagnosed and treated at our hospital. Among t… Show more

“…Other clinical factors, such as perforation and obstruction, were not studied because these factors were not available from the SEER database. However, these factors adversely impact outcomes and may affect the survival of CRC patients [ 35 , 36 ]. The SEER database includes only the US population, and the results of this study may not be transferred to all other countries.…”

“…The prognosis was even worse among patients who presented with intestinal obstruction and advanced-stage cancer. Several studies have demonstrated that the survival period for such patients ranges from a few weeks to several months [ 14 - 16 ]. For instance, Chen et al [ 16 ] studied the survival duration of patients with stage IV colorectal cancer complicated with bowel obstruction.…”

“…There was significant heterogeneity (Cochran Q, P = 0.009; I 2 = 74.0%). When one study was omitted through sensitivity analysis [49], there was less significant heterogeneity (Cochran Q, P = 0.098; I 2 = 56.9%), with no noticeable influence on the pooled result.…”

“…Four studies [22,[47][48][49], including data on 2799 patients (167 metachronous pmCRC, 2632 non-pmCRC) regarding malignant bowel obstruction, were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled analysis indicated that obstruction was positively associated with metachronous PM (OR 4.467; 95% CI 1.919-10.398; P = 0.001) (Figure 4a).…”
