Effect of Boron on Human Health

Abstract: Studies on boron, its mechanism and health effects are growing although the safe limits of daily boron exposure have not been clarified. Current knowledge about the toxic levels of boron on humans is not sufficient and needs to be improved. The main toxic effect of boron in animals involves the reproductive system, including specific adverse effects in the male reproductive tract in rats, mice and dogs. Boron determination in biological matrices needs sufficiently sensitive procedures for detection at trace le… Show more

“…In addition decrease in oxidative stress parameters by increasing boron doses was detected. On the contrary, in the studies conducted on humans who live in boron-rich regions, there is neither a negative effect on reproductive system nor semen (5,21,30).…”

“…Frequently, the high boron concentration in the injection seawater for a desalination process can exceed the standards for drinking water. Studies on boron, its mechanism, and heath effects show that 112 mg/kg body weight is an acute poisoning hazard; it is a main cause of gastrointestinal tract abnormalities [56,57]. Animal experiment have revealed the risk and/or impact and/or toxicity results from food boron intake that exceeds the standards set by law.…”

“…Boron is among the trace elements acting in cell membrane functions, enzyme reactions, and mineral and hormonal metabolism (8,9). Boron has a structure that forms response against some damage and infections.…”
