The Pabdeh Brown Shale Unit (BSU) is an organic-rich calcareous mudstone within the Paleogene Pabdeh Formation, which has not yet been investigated in detail. A total of 166 core and cutting samples were selected from four wells in the Dezful Embayment to investigate the organic geochemical and the mineralogical compositions, as well as the shale oil potential of the BSU. XRD results show that it is mainly comprised of calcite (53wt.%), clay minerals (25wt.%), and quartz (14wt.%). TOC contents generally range from 1 to 9wt.% (avg. 4.2, 2.9, 5.2 and 3.3wt.%, for GS, KR, RR and RS wells, respectively) with HI values ranging between 400 and 650 mg HC/g TOC. Based on average values of T max and vitrinite reflectance, as well as saturate biomarker ratios, the BSU is immature at wells RR and RS (ranging from 0.3 to 0.53%) and its maturity increases northward at wells KR and GS (ranging from 0.5% to 0.67%). The organic matter is dominated by Type ΙΙ kerogen and is generally composed of liptinite and amorphous material with minor terrestrial input. Based on various biomarker parameters, the organic matter was most likely deposited under anoxic marine conditions. The mineralogical characteristics (i.e. presence of brittle minerals) and organic geochemical properties (i.e. TOC 2wt% and Type II kerogen) support the conclusion that the Pabdeh BSU displays a considerable shale oil potential where it attains appropriate thermal maturity.

Worldwide, for older fields that are in the late stages of production period, production wells that lose production value due to high water cut are usually shut down. In this situation, the remaining oil in the reservoir will be re-enriched under the influence of gravity differentiation and capillary forces. Production practices find when the production well is closed for a long time and then opened for restarting production, the water cut drops dramatically and the output rise sharply. In order to anticipate the effects of enrichment of remaining oil in the reservoir, this paper analyzes 10 influencing factors respectively. Secondly, change of water cut before and after shut-in is used as the evaluation index of residual oil enrichment effect. Numerical simulation method is used to simulate the influence of different factors on the effect of external migrations of remaining oil at different levels. Grey correlation analysis is utilized to rank the correlation of 10 factors on residual oil enrichment and then we can get the main controlling factors affecting residual oil enrichment. Finally, the response surface analysis method is used to establish a 5-factor 3-level model, and the corresponding prediction results are obtained through numerical simulation experiments. The main control factors are fitted to obtain the prediction formula of the remaining oil enrichment effect. As a result, we can use the prediction formula to forecast the enrichment effect of remaining oil under different reservoir parameters.

Estimation of Drilling Rate of Penetration Using Hybrid Machine Learning Methods

Rate of penetration(ROP) is one of the most important well drilling parameters, and its estimation and optimization is very important during well planning and reducing related costs. Meanwhile, the prediction of this parameter is challenging due to the complex interactions between the drill bit and the formation rock. In this study, different Machine Learning(ML) estimation techniques including Artificial Neural Networks(ANN), Random Forest(RF) and Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) are hybridized with meta-heuristic algorithms, including Crow Search Algorithm(CSA), Genetic Algorithm(GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) has been used to estimate ROP more accurately. The aforementioned meta-heuristic algorithms have been used to intelligently adjust hyper-parameters of estimation ML methods based on data. The results show that it will significantly improve the estimation performance. Among the models, RF-GA, RF-CSA and LSSVM-GA were recognized as the top three models, respectively. The value of the correlation coefficients between the estimated and the actual values of ROP in these models was 0.98, 0.974, and 0.972, respectively. Also, the mean square error (RMSE) values for these models were obtained 2.89, 3.25 and 3.37, respectively. Depth, mud weight and rotation speed are identified as the most influential parameters in the response of estimation models. The findings emphasize the effectiveness of combining ML methods with meta-heuristic algorithms to accurately estimate drilling penetration rates. The results provide valuable insights to optimize drilling operations, reduce costs and increase drilling performance in oil fields. The results of this study in the field of drilling optimization can be useful in engineering-based drilling decisions.
