Effect of biotic elicitors on polyphenol production in Cayratia trifolia cell suspension cultures analyzed by HPLC

Abstract: Cayratia trifolia Linn. Domin Syn. Vitis trifolia (family: Vitaceae) contains polyphenols as major bioactive compounds. Plant polyphenolics, such as stilbenes, possess a broad spectrum of pharmacological and therapeutic effects, including antioxidative, anticancerous, antiatherosclerotic, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects. Elicitation is one of the important strategies to enhance secondary metabolite production in cell suspension cultures. In the present study, the effect of two b… Show more

“…HPLC is one of the most reliable methods to determine the changes in phenolic content in the presence of elicitor compounds or under different growth conditions [23,68]. The HPLC chromatogram (Figure 5A-D) showed an increase in the concentration of some phenolic compounds in the presence of both p-CA and Phe supplementations.…”

“…In recent years, researchers have explored strategies to further enhance the bioactive content of legumes by manipulating the germination conditions. One such approach involves the use of exogenous precursors or elicitor compounds to stimulate the synthesis of specific bioactive compounds [23][24][25][26][27]. Precursors are compounds that can be metabolized within a plant system to produce targeted bioactive compounds [28].…”

“…There is sufficient evidence that the culture medium composition greatly influences the micropropagation of Pueraria species and determines the growth, development, and metabolite composition of plant tissues [ 29 ]. The use of biotic elicitors has been shown to facilitate cell growth and increase the accumulation of bioactive molecules within cells and tissues [ 30 , 31 , 32 ]. Elicitor concentration is a crucial aspect of productive elicitation, and plant species differ in their optimal concentration [ 33 ].…”

“…The biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites is influenced by environmental stress, but the accumulation of desired metabolites can be stimulated by the application of specific precursors and elicitors (Wang et al, 2015). The synthesis and accumulation of secondary metabolites in cell and organ cultures can be triggered by the application of elicitors into culture media (Naik and Al-Khayri, 2016;Rora et al, 2020).…”
