Although the use of biochar to promote plant growth has been reported by many researchers, the combined effect of prickly pear waste biochar (BC) and Azolla (AZ) in a field experiment on the roselle plants did yet receive attention. Therefore, the study aims to evaluate the effect of biochar and Azolla extract on the growth, production, and quality of roselle plants. The experiment treatments were in a completely randomized block design with three replicates. Biochar was added at rates of 0, 10, and 20 ton ha−1 and AZ was applied at rates of 0, 3, and 6% in addition to a control treatment. Biochar added at high rate (20 ton ha−1) significantly increased the fresh and dry weights of sepals by 27.98 and 35.73%, respectively, compared to the control. The corresponding values were significantly increased by 11.89 and 11.85% over the control when Azolla was added at rate of 6%. The interaction effect of both BC and AZ treatments at high rate significantly increased the fresh and dry weight of sepals by 47.16 and 60.59%, respectively, compared to the control. The interaction effect of BC and AZ realized significant effect on soil properties, growth and yield, as well as pigments of roselle plants. This is a good evident means that BC and AZ applications separately or combined are considered promising materials for sustainable organic agriculture and safety food.

Agricultural management of alkaline calcareous soils is considered challenging issues. For alkaline calcareous soil fertility, it is important to understand the action mode of organic amendments such as acidic biochar (ABC). Pot experiment was carried out under the greenhouse condition on 15 th of October 2020, at the Experimental Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Al-Azhar University, Assuit, Egypt, to investigate the effect of ABC application rates on calcareous sandy soil properties and Fennel-Baladi plant growth. The soil treatments were control without any addition of biochar or fertilizers (CK), the recommended dose of granular superphosphate 12% (CF), and 1%, 2% and 3% of ABC per kg of soil, respectively. The acidified biochar enhances soil chemical properties (soil reaction pH, soil salinity EC and organic matter content). Available NPK were significantly increased by increasing ABC doses. The treatment of 3% acidic biochar (ABC3) recorded the highest value of available N (38.1 mg kg -1 ), P (24.0 mg kg -1 ) and K (112 mg kg -1 ). The highest value of N, P and K uptake (8.34, 6.83 and 9.53 g pot -1 ) was recorded with the treatment ABC3.The addition of acidified biochar enhanced the growth parameters (fresh and dry weights, plant height, stem diameter, branch number and chlorophyll A and B) of the fennel plant. Increasing biochar application rate caused an increase in NPK use efficiencies since they increased by 275, 275 and 275%, respectively, compared to the control treatment.

Cadmium-contaminated soil significantly threatens global food security and human health. This scenario gives rise to significant worries regarding widespread environmental pollution. Biochar and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can effectively immobilize cadmium in the soil in an environmentally friendly way. Existing studies have separately focused on the feasibility of each in remediating polluted soil. However, their association during the remediation of cadmium-polluted soils remains unclear. This review paper aims to elucidate the potential of biochar, in conjunction with AMF, as a strategy to remediate soil contaminated with cadmium. This paper comprehensively analyzes the current understanding of the processes in cadmium immobilization in the soil environment by examining the synergistic interactions between biochar and AMF. Key factors influencing the efficacy of this approach, such as biochar properties, AMF species, and soil conditions, are discussed. The influences of biochar–AMF interactions on plant growth, nutrient uptake, and overall ecosystem health in cadmium-contaminated environments are highlighted. This review indicates that combining biochar and AMF can improve cadmium immobilization. The presence of AMF in the soil can create numerous binding sites on biochar for cadmium ions, effectively immobilizing them in the soil. Insights from this review contribute to a deeper understanding of sustainable and eco-friendly approaches to remediate cadmium-contaminated soils, offering potential applications in agriculture and environmental management.
