Effect of Benzotriazole on the Localized Corrosion of Copper Covered with Carbonaceous Residue

Abstract: Carbonaceous residues on copper pipes during the manufacturing process are known to be one of the main causes of pitting corrosion on copper pipes. This study examined the corrosion-inhibiting effect of benzotriazole (BTA) on C12200 copper pipes with carbonaceous film in synthetic tap water. In the absence of BTA, localized corrosion mechanisms due to galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, and oxygen-concentration cell were proposed in the boundary part of the carbonaceous film on the copper through X-ray phot… Show more

“…A less critical change was observed for the TGA profile of BTA-fMSNP ( Figure 3 b) with two weight losses at 238 °C and 342 °C corresponding to a mass variation of 4% and 8%, respectively. The evident difference in the loading of corrosion inhibitors is probably due to the difference in the chemistry of MBT and BTA [ 52 , 53 ]. MBT is a planar molecule that can be found in two tautomeric forms with a thione (left) or thiol (right) group ( Figure 2 c).…”

“…This suggests that the morphology of the low index surfaces might not have an adequate availability of adatoms by, e.g., not exposing enough defective sites, to produce the necklace polymer. On the one hand this indicates the necessity to work on more realistic substrates [76][77][81][82][83], and to investigate further the role of copper adatoms.…”

“…1,2,3 Benzotriazole (BTAH) and its derivatives are well known inhibitor and widely used for protection of copper and copper-based alloys in different types of environments 11 13 . They are also reported to protect steel in alkaline environment though with poor inhibitive effects 14 , 15 .…”
