The aim of this study was to evaluate the preservation effect of the pomegranate peel extract (PPE)-lysozyme (Lys) combination addition on gelatin (G)-polycaprolactone (PCL) composite film on the quality of mackerel Scomberomorus commerson via physicochemical analysis (pH, total viable bases nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), free fatty acid (FFA), weight loss, color), microbiological (total mesophilic count (TMC) and psychrotrophic (PTC) count) and sensorial assessments during refrigerated storage. The results showed that incorporating PPE and Lys into G/PCL solution could significantly (P < .05) improve the quality of fish fillets. Among all treatments, TMC and PTC of mackerel fish with the control treatment increased rapidly and were generally higher than other treatments (P < .05). Thus, G-PCL film containing both of Lys and PPE can remarkably delay the growth of bacteria of mackerel fillets. The results indicated that the Lys in combination with PPE could be effective in the reduction of TBARS and FFA values of mackerel wrapped. In addition, the synergistic effect between Lys and PPE improved the antibacterial activity of the gelatin solution. G/PCL-Lys-PPE had the best effect on reducing the weight loss and color properties of the samples. It was seen that the addition of Lys/PPE improved the sensory quality of mackerel fish and these results were supported by the outcomes of bacterial and physicochemical analysis. The increase (>9 days) in the shelf-life was attributed to the antioxidant and antimicrobial characteristics of G/PCL film containing both of PPE and Lys. These results confirmed that G/PCL-Lys-PPE film was effective for the preservation of mackerel. ARTICLE HISTORY

Comparing handline and trolling fishing methods in the recreational pelagic fishery in the Gulf of Oman

The choice of fishing gear and catching strategy should be taken into consideration in the management of fish stocks. Here, paired fishing trials in a pelagic recreational fishery compared the catch composition, catch rate and size selectivity between handline and trolling fishing methods in Iranian coastal waters of the Gulf of Oman. Total catch rate was 1.06 fish hr–1 vs 0.88 fish hr–1 for handline and trolling, respectively, a 17% difference which was significant (p < 0.05). Generally, the handline method captured more fish than trolling for most species, but size selectivity tended to be species-specific per gear type. The handline fishing method captured larger talang queenfish (Scomberoides commersonnianus), while trolling captured larger narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson), pickhandle barracuda (Sphyraena jello) and Indian threadfish (Alectis indicus). Technical measures, such as gear restrictions, could be applied to recreational pelagic fisheries management in the Gulf of Oman. Such measures could improve species-specific exploitation patterns.

In this study, the efficiency of two fishing methods (a) traditional handline commonly used in the Strait of Istanbul and (b) light rock fishing (LRF), which is beginning to spread in recent years, were investigated by monthly sampling between September 2014 and September 2015. One classic handline fishing tackle and one LRF fishing tackle were used in the test fishing exercise. In addition, the effects of the hook sizes (numbers 6, 8 and 10) used in the handline fishery on the size selectivity for horse mackerels were also studied. Catches using both types of fishing gear were mainly composed of Trachurus mediterraneus (89.60%), Scorpeana porcus (5.12%), Sardina pilchardus (1.98%), Atherina boyeri (0.99%), Liza aurata (0.66%), Scorpaena scrofa (0.50%), Pomatomus saltatrix (0.33%), Sprattus sprattus (0.33%) and a few other species. The frequency distributions of horse mackerel caught using handlines and LRF were slightly different and ranged between 6.1–19.0 cm and 9.0–16.0 cm, respectively. Of all the handlines, LRF yielded the highest catch per unit effort (CPUE), 1.295 kg/10 hooks/hour. The log normal model selectivity curve gave the best fit for the T. mediterraneus by using the SELECT method. The modal lengths of horse mackerel caught by handline hook sizes no.10 and no. 8 hook were calculated as 13.4 cm and 17.7 cm, respectively. In addition, the spread values were determined with 3.58 and 4.74, respectively.
