Effect of Bacillus subtilis on Aeromonas hydrophila infection resistance in juvenile freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man)

Abstract: This experiment was carried out to investigate the potential probiotics properties of Bacillus subtilis in protecting of juvenile freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii against Aeromonas hydrophila infection. A B. subtilis bacterium isolated from gut of juvenile prawns was added to the prawns feed at 10 8 cells g -1 feed. There were significant differences (P \ 0.05) between B. subtilis-treated and control groups in growth and survival enhancement of juvenile prawns after 60 days of feeding trial. Sixty d… Show more

“…In aquaculture, probiotics have captured special attention for its efficacious function for supplementary synthesis of digestive enzymes [20], and improvement in growth performance of the farmed species [21,22]. Bacillus have been widely used as putative probiotics for its beneficial nutritional impact, antagonism against microbial pathogens and easy supplementation [23,24], as reported for larval development of Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata, L.) by Arıg et al [25].…”

“…The A. hydrophila , AH‐1N (10 6 cells/ml), was first inoculated (day 0) via static immersion (Keysami & Mohammadpour, ) in the positive control and probiotic treatments. A second dose of bacterial challenge was performed on day 16 with an addition of AH‐1N (10 6 cells/ml) after the first inoculation.…”

“…Addition of Bacillus sp. as feed additives able to improve digestive activity of the prawn by synthesizing vitamins and cofactors resulting in greater growth performance (Keysami & Mohammadpour, 2013; Keysami et al., 2011) Therefore, the increase of SGR in prawn fed with the probiotic in this study might be due to stimulation of digestive enzymes.…”

“…Treatment feeds were prepared according to Allameh et al. (2015) and Keysami and Mohammadpour (2013) with slight modifications. Briefly, the pellets were soaked in a treatment solution (Table 1) for 30 min on a flat tray and oven‐dried at 32°C.…”
