Effect of austenitic fillers on microstructural and mechanical properties of ultra-low nickel austenitic stainless steel

Abstract: In the present investigation effect of austenitic fillers namely E308, E309 and E310 on microstructural and mechanical properties of ultra-low nickel austenitic stainless steel weldment was analysed. The WRC-1992 diagram has been used to predict δ-ferrite and solidification mode of weld metal. Microstructural exploration confers the variation in magnitude and morphologies of δ-ferrite for different Cr eq /Ni eq ratio. It was observed that greater amount of δferrite resulted in improved tensile strength. On the… Show more

“…The hardness variation, between E308L and E309L weldments as depicted in Fig. 5, can be attributed to the differences in the δ-ferrite content and morphologies 12) . Moreover, an increasing trend in the hardness value was observed when moving towards AISI 201 side via FZ in all three weldments.…”

“…2(a) and 2(b) respectively. This additional lathy ferrite morphology in E308L ller is attributed to the higher Cr/Ni equivalent ratio which, resulted in more amount of retained δ-ferrite and subsequently lathy morphology has been formed 12) . Further, the grain coarsening is observed in HAZ of both the weldments but, it is more prominent towards AISI 201 side.…”

“…Vashishtha et al investigated on effect of austenitic filler on microstructural and mechanical properties of low nickel austenitic stain less steel. They observed that E308 filler contain higher δ ferrite and results in increase tensile strength of the material than sample welded with E309 and E310 filler 19 . Schaeffler's and WRC-1992 are the predictive diagrams for the evaluation of the microstructure and δ ferrite of the weld zone 20 .…”
