Effect of atorvastatin on endothelial function and inflammation in long‐duration type 1 diabetic patients without coronary heart disease and arterial hypertension

Abstract: Atorvastatin improves endothelial function and reduces some proinflammatory and prothrombotic markers of atherosclerosis in T1DM patients without CHD and AH. The surprising effect of atorvastatin on serum vWF levels in T1DM requires further study.

“…Plaque stabilization [34], decreased inflammation mediators [34], inhibition of GTPases in the Rho family [28] and improved vascular function [35] by statins, however, have been suggested to contribute to CV protection. Knowing that AV and SV increase vascular relaxation in aortic rings from diabetic rats, and that this improvement is suppressed by L -nitroarginine methylester [unpubl.…”

“…According to a study, the accumulation of cardiovascular risk factors is associated with endothelial dysfunction in diabetic patients, and that insulin resistance as well as high blood pressure could play a pathogenic role in the development of endothelial dysfunction [19]. The administration of pioglitazone [20], atorvastatin [21,22] and oral vitamin D2 [19] improve endothelial function in diabetics.…”

“…High-resolution ultrasound has become a standard noninvasive technique for clinical assessment of endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular disease risk through quantification of flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery (Celermajer et al 1992). Endothelial dysfunction, as measured by reduced flow-mediated dilation, has been associated with human vasculitides (Filer et al 2003;Noto et al 2009) and tracks with other markers associated with cardiovascular inflammation (Konduracka et al 2008). Techniques for measuring flow-mediated dilation in nonclinical species have been described for dog and rat Puglia et al 2006;Knight et al 2013).…”
