Effect of Aqueous Leaf Leachate of Anthemis cotula– An Alien Invasive Species on Germination Behaviour of Some Field Crops

Abstract: Leaf leachate of Anthemis cotula inhibits seed germination of the commonly cultivated field crops in Kashmir valley. Among the four indices of germination (G T , S, AS, CRG), S (speed of germination) and AS (speed of accumulated germination) are sensitive enough to establish the allelopathic activity of the leaf leachate. Inhibition of seed/grain germination of the field crops showed a species-specific and dose-dependent response with highest inhibition occurring at 5000 ppm concentration. Brassica campestris … Show more

“…Allelopathy is one of the mechanisms that is contributing to the success of at least some of the worst plant invaders in the world (Weir et al 2004), including Eltrygia repens (Korhammer & Haslinger 1994), Cyperus rotundus (Agarwal et al 2002), Lantana camara (Saxena 2000), and Anthemis cotula (Allaie et al 2006). The significant inhibition that the water extracts from the M. micrantha leaves, stems, and roots imposed on the germination rate, germination speed, radicle and hypocotyl length, and dry weight of the C. lacryma-jobi seedlings suggests the presence of allelopathic water-soluble substances in the extracts.…”

“…From this, the proportion of seeds that germinated and the speed of germination could be determined. Speed of germination was calculated using an adjusted formula from Allaie et al (2006): Σ(N 1 /1+N 2 /2+N 3 /3+…..+N i/i ) , where N 1 is number of seeds germinated on day 1, N 2 is number of seeds germinated on day 2, etc. and N i is the number of seeds germinated on day i.…”

“…The species was identified by Dr. Gemma Bramley and a voucher specimen is deposited in Kew Herbarium (K). Commercial seeds of Papaver rhoeas L. (La Semeria-www.Lasemeria.itItaly) and Avena sativa L. (Il Monastero-Sementi-Italy), chosen as model species of dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous plants (Allaie et al, 2006), were used. Damaged and undersized seeds were discarded; the seeds to be assayed were selected based on the uniformity of size.…”
