Effect of Applying Crushed Ice Gel Pads on Episiotomy Pain and Wound Healing Among Postpartum Primiparous Women

Abstract: Background: Episiotomy pain is the most common complaint among postpartum women. One of the simple nursing interventions to decrease it and improve the healing process is applying the crushed ice gel pads. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of applying crushed ice gel pads on episiotomy pain and wound healing among postpartum primiparous women. A quasi-experimental study design was used. A total of 200 postnatal women (intervention and control group) were selected from the postpartum ward and outpa… Show more

“…This was done by the researcher by documenting the results of the perineal wound care intervention using the maternity cool gel pad. The hope of the applied management is to prevent infection in the perineal wound caused by wrong knowledge, attitudes and treatment actions (21,22) Postpartum mothers need to be convinced that perineal wounds require a process in the healing process (23). Boyle (2014) states in his scientific work the importance of managing perineal trauma from an early age by implementing muscle contraction and relaxation strategies that aim to increase the revascularization of damaged muscle fibers so as to support the perineal wound healing process.…”

“…Assessment of wound healing was carried out by midwives on the first, third and seventh days postpartum. Assessment of wound healing is carried out by looking at indicators of wound healing using the REEDA standard (redness, edema, ecchymosis, discharge and approximation) (Khalefa & El-Saidy, 2018). For the healing rating scale used by REEDA and the researcher's modification, the value used for the healing scale is 0-15 points.…”

“…Therefore, these rays relax muscles, promote circulation, and provide pain relief [ 18 ]. Recently, studies have shown conflicting findings on the most effective strategies to alleviate pain from episiotomy and improve wound healing [ 19 , 20 ]. Therefore, this study was carried out to compare the effects of dry heat versus moist heat application in reducing perineal pain and promoting episiotomy wound healing among primiparous women.…”
