Effect of Apple Cultivar on Foraging Behavior and Pollen Transfer by Honey Bees1

Abstract: The flower structure of the ‘Delicious’ apple (Malus domestica Borkh) differs from that of most apple cultivars by having gaps at the base of stamens. Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) learn to collect nectar through these gaps and avoid the flowers’ sexual parts; consequently, visits to ‘Delicious’ are less than half as effective in pollination as are visits to other cultivars.

“…Calcium chloride applied to abs cission zones of bean explants inhibited abscission and depressed ethylene production (15); it also decreased leaf abscission in pecans treated w ith E threl (12). Hoon (7) applied Ca(H2P0 4)2,KH2P0 4 , and GA to citrus at full bloom or petal fall and reported both Ca(H2P 0 4)2 and KH2P 0 4 decreased fruit drop more effectively than GA. Combinations of GA with ben zylamino purine or calcium as whole-tree sprays have not been thoroughly tested as fruit-setting agents under Florida's humid conditions.…”

“…A record of different crop plants visited by the foragers of the red dwarf honey bee (Apis florea F.) was maintained through the year round. To ascertain whether this honey bee acted as a pollinator or a non-pollinator of the flowers of a reference crops it visited, the foraging behavior of its visitors on that crop was studied following Robinson 30 , Sihag 31,32 and Sihag and Shivrana 33 . While visiting the flowers of a crop plant, if the foragers of this honey bee worked from the top of the flower, such foragers virtually came in contact with the reproductive organs (anthers and stigma) of the flowers (Fig.…”

“…Apis mellifera L. is considered the most important pollinator of the apple crop and can be managed efficiently (Kumar et al, 1989) for commercial pollination in all applegrowing regions of the world (Brittain, 1933 andGupta et al, 1993). The viability of pollen carried on the pollen collector's body is higher than nectar collectors, whereas pollen collectors have lower consistency to one cultivar of apple as compared to the nectar collector (Kendall, 1973;Robinson, 1979). Thus, the proportion of pollen collectors is important for improving the effectiveness of colonies for better pollination.…”
