Effect of aphid biology and morphology on plant virus transmission

Abstract: Aphids severely affect crop production by transmitting many plant viruses. Viruses are obligate intracellular pathogens that mostly depend on vectors for their transmission and survival. A majority of economically important plant viruses are transmitted by aphids. They transmit viruses either persistently (circulative or non-circulative) or non-persistently. Plant virus transmission by insects is a process that has evolved over time and is strongly influenced by insect morphological features and biology. Over … Show more

“…Mesoniviruses, a group of enveloped, single-stranded positivesense RNA viruses that classified into the family Mesoniviridae, have a genome of ∼20 kb that contains 6-7 ORFs. Two large overlapped ORFs (ORF1a and ORF1b) located on the 5'-proximal of the genome (∼15 kb) encodes the NS proteins, which are arranged in order as the 3C-like protease (3CLpro, encoded by ORF1a), RdRp, zinc-binding module and associated helicase (ZnHel1), exoribonuclease (ExoN), N 7 methyltransferase (NMT), and 2'-O-methytransferase (OMT) (encoded by ORF1b). The other ORFs located at the 3'-terminus of the genome encode the structural proteins, including the spike (S) protein and other membrane proteins (68).…”

“…Herbivorous hemipteran insects are important vectors of plant viruses (Jayasinghe et al, 2022; Rosen et al, 2015; Whitfield et al, 2018). As they feed on plant tissues without killing the cells, they can effectively deliver viruses to living tissue.…”

“…In addition to their own damage to crops, hemipteran pestssuch as planthoppers and aphids-can transmit viral diseases, causing heavy losses to agricultural production. [1][2][3] Synthetic insecticides mainly are used to control hemipteran pests; however, an increasing number of synthetic insecticides are restricted or banned as a consequence of severe resistance in pest populations, toxicity to bees and other environmental issues. [4][5][6] Accordingly, there is an urgent need to discover and develop alternative controls that are highly efficient, do not cause a high degree of resistance in pest populations, and that are more environmentally safe for nontarget organisms.…”
