Effect of antenna polarization on the capacity of a multiple element system in an indoor environment

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the behavior of a multiple element antenna system in an indoor environment based on the measurements taken in the Lucent Bell Labs building in Crawford Hill, NJ, with a system of 12 transmitters and 15 receivers. In particular, we investigate the capacity behavior with respect to the polarization of the transmitting/receiving elements and the distance between the transmitting and the receiving arrays. The analysis of the power rolloff versus distance clearly demonstrates the different … Show more

“…Furthermore, it has been shown that the use of polarization for spatial multiplexing-based MIMO systems can lead to significant performance improvements, and consequently many researchers have addressed the polarization multiplexing/diversity issue. Indoor channel measurements with dualpolarized or hybrid array configurations have been reported in the literature [7][8][9].…”

“…In MIMO systems, the channel capacity of MIMO system with polarization antenna array is approximately 10%~20% higher than that with space-separated co-polarized antenna array, though the system SNR of polarization antenna array is lower (Kyritsi et al, 2002;Wallace et al, 2003). Another measurement results in micro-and pico-cell show the channel capacity of MIMO systems with dual-polarized antenna elements are 14% higher than that with twicenumbered single-polarized antennas (Sulonen et al, 2003).…”
