“…Ventral lobe blots were probed with a gel-purified 420-bp cDNA corresponding to the C, subunit of Prostate Binding Protein (PBP) kindly provided by Dr. R. Matusik (University of Manitoba, Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada). Lateral and dorsal lobe blots were probed with gel-purified 520-bp probasin cDNA [29,30] and 300-bp RWB cDNA [31], which were also supplied by R. Matusik.…”

“…Lobe-specific carbohydrates and glycoproteins are secreted by different prostatic lobes. For example, prostatein (which may be identical to prostatic steroid-binding protein or estramustine-binding protein) is a major secretory glycoprotein in the rat ventral prostate [14][15][16]; two major androgen-dependent secretory glycoproteins, dorsal proteins I (probably identical to a transglutaminase from the coagulating gland) and II, are secreted by both dorsal prostate and coagulating gland [17][18][19][20], whereas two unique small proteins (21 and 23 kDa; also named pM-40) and a protein named seminal vesicle secretion II protein (SVS II or pRWB) are secreted by the dorsolateral prostate [8,[21][22][23]. Additionally, the dorsal prostate is rich in fructose and spermine; the lateral prostate is rich in zinc; the ventral prostate is rich in spermine but contains little carbohydrates; and the coagulating gland secretes large amounts of free fructose and glucose [10,11,14,24,25].…”

“…To evaluate the secretory function of ventral prostate epithelial cells, we used immunohistochemistry of the prostate-specific secretory protein probasin (Dodd et al, 1986). This protein is particularly highly expressed in rat dorsolateral prostate, but as indicated by immunoblotting using a specific polyclonal antiprobasin antibody, probasin was also expressed in rat and mouse ventral prostates (Fig.…”
