Effect of an Intervention Standardization System on Pediatric Dosing and Equipment Size Determination

Abstract: Color coding was associated with a significant reduction in deviation from recommended doses in simulated pediatric emergencies. Numerous potentially clinically significant deviations from recommended doses and equipment sizes were avoided. Future studies should measure impact in the real clinical setting.

“…For children, using a standardized dosing system based on weight, such as the Broselow tape, during simulations has been associated with significant reductions in deviations from recommended doses. 21 Use of these standardized dosing systems After intubation, a patient in septic shock was started on norepinephrine and vasopressin 0.4 units/min, as opposed to the intended 0.04 units/min. This 10-fold overdose that continued infusing in the patient was attributed as a likely cause of the patient subsequently having a myocardial infarction.…”

“…This tape allows the application of preset drug calculations and equipment sizes using an estimate of the child's weight based on the child's length. This system quickly and accurately estimates a child's weight, calculates drug doses and guides equipment size selection [79,86].…”

“…Endotracheal intubation, venous access, and mechanical ventilation may all become "foreign" procedures. 16,17 The Broselow pediatric emergency tape was designed to alleviate a number of challenges in emergency care of children. 18 The Broselow tape is a 146.5 cm strip of laminated paper divided into colored regions that correspond to patient height.…”
