Effect of an acute exercise bout on immediate post‐exercise irisin concentration in adults: A meta‐analysis

Abstract: Irisin is a recently discovered myokine that increases adipocyte metabolism, induces further "browning" of white adipose tissue, and enhances glucose metabolism. No study has ever determined how an acute bout of exercise impacts immediate post-exercise irisin concentration using a meta-analytic approach. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of an acute bout of exercise on the magnitude of post-exercise irisin concentration in adults using meta-analytic procedures. “…Our results also agree with a recent meta‐analysis conducted by our group suggesting that irisin, like many other hormones, increases acutely in the blood (Fox et al. ). However, in this meta‐analysis, no data were available to perform a subanalysis investigating the acute irisin response in obese individuals compared to normal weight individuals.…”

“…Another study reported that the changes in serum levels of irisin are associated with post-exercise duration, with a rising trend following single sessions of endurance exercise and strength training, then after the peak value gradually declined until 24 h [42]. In addition, a recent metaanalysis concluded that fitness level and BMI were identified as important predictive variables for post-exercise irisin concentration [43]. In contrast, a few studies showed that neither acute nor chronic exercise had any influence on FNDC5 and irisin levels in overweight and obese people [44].…”

“…Conversely, sprint training for 4 weeks significantly decreased the resting serum irisin concentration in healthy males [ 14 ]. Recently, Fox et al, using a single and multiple meta-regressions, suggested that an acute bout of exercise was accompanied by a post-exercise average increase in irisin concentration of 15% [ 15 ]. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the effect of one bout of aerobic exercise of moderate intensity and HIIT exercise on irisin levels in skeletal muscle and plasma of sedentary adolescent girls who were overweight or obese.…”
