Effect of altitude on essential oil composition and on glandular trichome density in three "Nepeta" species ("N. sessilifolia", "N. heliotropifolia" and "N. fissa")

Abstract: In the current study, the trichome density and the chemical variation of the hydrodistillated essential oils were determined along the altitudinal gradient in Nepeta sessilifolia, N. heliotropifolia, and N. fissa. The capitate glandular trichomes were predominant in all populations studied. Denser leaves indumentum was observed in high altitude populations of N. heliotropifolia, and in low altitude populations of N. sessilifolia and N. fissa. Moreover, the inter-population chemical polymorphism was detected. I… Show more

“…Oxygenated monoterpene ratios mathematically decreased with increasing altitudes, but there was no linear increase or decrease in oxygenated sesquiterpene ratios. Similar findings were also reported by [42]. Oxygenated monoterpenes were respectively followed by phenolic monoterpene (3.29 -25.91%), sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (2.92 -5.94%), oxygenated sesquiterpene (0.92 -1.63%) and monoterpenes hydrocarbons (0.04 -0.17%) (Table 2).…”

“…Differently, 34 , 39 , 40 , reported that oxygenated sesquiterpene (35.3% and 33.14%) and oxygenated monoterpene (49%) were the main components of this essential oil obtained from plants collected in Ghamshelo and Arak, Iran. Hence, the high content of acids is a unique characteristic of the plants harvested from Isfahan province of Iran and can be strongly affected by the location, climatic and ecological conditions, field operations, growth stage, and genetic traits 41 .…”

“…The application of salinity stress (in the absence of nanoparticles) also created similar results, as with an increase in salinity stress, the amount of artemisinin decreased. Exogenous factors have strong effect on production of different plant metabolites (Talebi et al, 2019(Talebi et al, , 2020. For example, Aftab et al (2010) reported a synergistic relationship between endogenous H 2 O 2 and artemisinin contents, as both contents increased under low levels of salinity (50 and 100 mM) and decreased thereafter.…”
