Effect of Alliance Network Asymmetry on Firm Performance and Risk

Abstract: Persistent high failure rates of new product alliances call for identification of factors that might improve alliance outcomes. In this research, the authors identify two attributes of alliance network asymmetry that affect alliance performance and performance uncertainty: differences in the number of prealliance direct ties, which can create asymmetry in the volume of resources of the two firms, and differences in the interconnectivity among prealliance indirect ties, which leads the firms to possess differen… Show more

“…Studies on entrepreneurship have examined network structures and performance (Hite & Hesterly, 2001 ; Hoang and Antonic, 2003 ). Similar to this study, some studies have also examined the networks, business performance, and their interrelationships (Acquah Obeng, 2019 ; Baker, 1998 ; Burlina, 2019 ; Chakravarty et al, 2020 ; Goerzen et al, 2005 ; Gronum et al, 2012 ; Karami & Tang, 2019 ; Naude et al, 2014 ; Podolny, 1993 ; Rubino & Vitolla, 2018 ; Watson, 2007 ; Wang & Fang, 2021 ; Zacca et al, 2015 ). This research shows that access to good networks may have economic benefits.…”

“…This study adds to the nascent research stream to better understand the alliance activity of poorly embedded firms and thereby offers important theoretical implications on firm network dynamics (Ahuja, Soda and Zaheer, 2012; Ahuja et al ., 2009; Chakravarty, Zhou and Sharma, 2020). Recent studies demonstrate that by accepting unfavourable terms of trade, poorly embedded firms can increase their initial attraction to highly embedded alliance partners, though at the expense of limiting their own future expansion potentials (Ahuja et al ., 2009).…”

“…First, a node with high degree centrality means that it is directly related to many other nodes, that it is the main channel of resources and information, and that it occupies a central position in the network (Zhang et al. , 2021; Chakravarty et al. , 2020).…”
