Ants are thought to exert an important influence on the structure of arthropod assemblages through predation and competition. I examined the effect of a dominant ant, Iridomyrmex purpureus, on epigaeic arthropod assemblages on rock outcrops using an exclusion experiment. I compared arthropod assemblages on four replicate outcrops allocated to each of the following treatments: I. purpureus present; I. purpureus absent; I. purpureus excluded; and procedural control. Nests of I. purpureus were caged in summer 2001 and epigaeic arthropod assemblages were sampled at all sites using pitfall traps in autumn and spring 2001 and summer 2002. I also collected items from foraging workers to determine the diet of I. purpureus. Exclusion cages successfully reduced the abundance of I. purpureus workers in pitfall traps by more than 97%. Exclusion of I. purpureus did not affect the size distribution, biomass or abundance of arthropod predators or non-predatory arthropods, although the total biomass of ants was greater at sites with I. purpureus. Spider biomass, species richness, abundance and composition were also not affected by the presence of I. purpureus, although the I. purpureus mimic and specialist predator, Habronestes bradleyi, became less abundant at sites from which I. purpureus was excluded. Predation by I. purpureus on other arthropods may not have a significant effect on epigaeic arthropod communities, but the complex role of I. purpureus in this ecosystem and the high diversity of species belonging to multiple trophic levels may obscure its effects in this system.

The mutualism between ants and trophobiont insects is widely known as an interaction where the trophobionts are usually defended from their natural enemies by the ants. Ants can also remove herbivores, causing changes in the arthropod community structure and altering the stability of ecological communities. However, few studies have been conducted in field conditions to test the effects of mutualism on the associated arthropod community. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the mutualism between trophobiont insects and ants decreases the abundance and species richness of the associated arthropod community, supporting a more stable community. We also investigated whether the abundance of specific arthropod feeding groups is affected by the mutualism and whether plants with and without mutualism form a mosaic with different species composition, increasing overall species richness. Our assumptions were experimentally examined in a system comprising the host plant Psittacanthus robustus, three trophobionts and two tending ants. We showed that, locally, the abundance and species richness of the whole arthropod community did not decrease when mutualism was present, but the feeding group composed by predators was negatively affected by mutualism. Plants with trophobionts but without ants presented the highest stability. At the landscape level, plants with and without mutualism differed in arthropod species composition, suggesting that there was a mosaic formed by plants with and without mutualism, enhancing the overall species richness (or beta diversity). Overall, our results revealed that the mutualism can alter the structure and stability of the surrounding arthropod community.

Resumo. O pulgão Toxoptera citricida (Kyrkaldy) (Sternorrhyncha) é um potencial transmissor do vírus da tristeza cítrica sendo considerada uma praga importante para a cultura. Foi realizado monitoramento quinzenais no período entre outubro de 2002 a outrubro de 2003, com o objetivo de estudar a dinâmica populacional deste afídeo, incluindo predadores e a interação com formigas. Este levantamento foi realizado em cultivo orgânico de tangerina cv. Poncã, Fazendinha Agroecológica, Seropédica, RJ. A análise faunística dos formicídeos atendentes e dos predadores, foi através dos índices de diversidade . Ant-tending was considered medium to H' value (0.6585) and high to D value (0.9012). The equitability was considered medium too (e = 0.69). T. citricida populational dynamic is influenced to foliar shoot following predation and ant-tending. These two end factors are antagonist due to protection offer to ants at BCA.
