Effect of Aging on Chemical Composition and Rheological Properties of Neat and Modified Bitumen

Abstract: The aim of this research was to define the effect of oxidative aging on the chemical and rheological properties of neat and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer-modified bitumen. The experimental research had two objectives: firstly, the short and long-term effects of aging on the properties of neat and polymer-modified bitumen were investigated. Then, the aging indexes based on chemical and rheological properties to describe the age of unknown bitumen were established. Aging characteristics such as the Gae… Show more

“…The binder was recovered according to the procedure described in EN 12697-3 [ 37 ] using toluene as solvent. The effect of ageing of bitumen can affect the bitumen spectra, and it can be evaluated through IR spectroscopy [ 38 , 39 , 40 ]. To take this into consideration, fresh bitumen directly from manufacturer, binder subjected to simulated short-term ageing (RTFOT) and binder recover from HMA were tested.…”

“…The areas defined by the introduced baselines and the part of the spectrum were calculated using a specific software Origin. Each peak is attributed to a functional group remaining unaffected during service life, but also to groups responsible for aging or polymer presence [26,28]. When it comes to the groups responsible for TiO 2 , echoing [33][34][35] in the region below 1000 cm −1 , several peaks are ascribed to TiO 2 presence.…”

“…Chemical characterization of binders has received attention in the literature as it can present functional groups related to the crude oil origin, the polymer modification, and the degree of oxidation [26][27][28][29][30][31]. Since this paper aims to analyze the chemical characteristics of the transparent binder modified with nano-TiO 2 , three approaches were carried out: (i) identification of FTIR peaks;…”

“…Chemical characterization of binders has received attention in the literature as it can present functional groups related to the crude oil origin, the polymer modification, and the degree of oxidation [30][31][32][33][34][35]. Since this paper aims to analyze the chemical characteristics of the transparent binder modified with nano-TiO2, three approaches were carried out: i) identification of FTIR peaks; ii) establishment of a possible relationship between the TiO2 modification level and related chemical groups; and iii) comparison of standard indices with reference binders used in this study.…”
