Effect of ageing on space charge distribution in homogeneous and composite dielectrics

Abstract: Homogeneous and composite polymeric insulating systems under operation are subjected to various stresses, including thermal, causing degradation and deterioration to the material. Ageing increases charge accumulation within the volume of the material. In this paper, charge trapping and transport phenomena in thermally aged homogeneous epoxy resin and polyethylene are studied. Pulsed Electro-Acoustic (PEA) measurements are performed to obtain the spatial distribution of charge within the volume of a dielectric.… Show more

“…The interfacial region between two dielectrics is characterised by the high presence of 'traps' where space charges get confined [14]. Moreover, with ageing, the polymer chain breaks down, and the broken bonds produce new trapping sites [15]. These traps often capture electrons and confine them for the indefinite amount of time, giving rise to the phenomena of space charge.…”

“…[18,19] Under the prolonged operating conditions of the insulating material, the accumulated space charge in bulk causes the enhancement in the local electric field, which further results in internal damage and catastrophic failure. [20,21] For the enhancement in reliability and lifetime, various research groups are attempting to develop novel insulating materials, ensuring the end product is accumulating negligible space charge. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the impact of gamma irradiation on the dielectric properties and charge trap behavior both on the surface as well as on the bulk of the Al epoxy nanocomposite material.…”

“…Articles [ 9 , 10 , 11 ] present different aging and life models and their relation with space charge phenomena. The effect of aging in space charge behavior was analyzed in [ 12 ] for epoxy and polyethylene, and for XLPE HVDC cable insulation in [ 13 , 14 ]. Promising HVDC cable materials were the focus of [ 15 ].…”
