Effect of Age on Platelet 5-HT Concentrations in Healthy Controls, Depressed and Schizophrenic Patients

Abstract: The influence of age on platelet 5-HT concentrations was investigated in 85 male unipolar depressed inpatients, 113 male schizophrenic inpatients and 81 normal male controls. The correlation coefficients between platelet 5-HT concentrations and age within groups were very low and nonsignificant. Our results suggest that higher platelet 5-HT content, observed in schizophrenic patients, could not be ascribed to the influence of age.

“…Platelet 5-HT concentration might be affected by sex, age or seasonality. The effect of sex was excluded with the inclusion of only male subjects; the possible effect of age on platelet 5-HT content was 6 6 neglected as no significant relation between age and platelet 5-HT was found in healthy (Muck-Seler et al, 1996b;Pivac et al, 2001;Pivac et al, 2004b) or PTSD (present study) subjects, and the possible seasonal influence on platelet 5-HT parameters (Jakovljevic et al, 1997) was avoided since war veterans and healthy controls were sampled in the same season.…”

“…Nonsuppressors with intermittentchronic time course of schizophrenia had significantly higher, while those with intermittent and chronic time course had marginally higher basal and postdexamethasone platelet 5-HT levels than suppressors. Our previously published data excluded the possibility that hyperserotonemia found in schizophrenic patients was a consequence of prior medication [12], platelet monoamine oxidase activity [23], age [15] or seasonal influence [24].…”

“…Platelets were sedimented by further centrifugation of PRP at 10,000 g for 5 min. Platelet 5-HT concentrations were determined by the spectrofluorimetric method, as described previously [15]. Platelet protein was determined by the method of Lowry et al [16].…”

“…, 191 , 193 One study, although underlying no difference between patients and controls, noted that higher platelet 5-HT concentrations were more evident in psychotic than in nonpsychotic patients. Furthermore, the lowest platelet 5-HT concentration was associated with the most severe self-aggressive behaviors (both suicidal attempts and completed suicides) 201 202 An exploratory study examined associations between cortisol parameters, platelet 5-HT content, and platelet activity markers (CD40, CD40L, and CD62P) in 19 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and untreated comorbid MDD, 24 T2DM patients, 21 patients with untreated MDD, and 25 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects, by using HPLC with UV detection.…”
