Effect of Ag‐containing Nano‐composite Active Packaging System on Survival of Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris

Abstract: The effectiveness of Ag + -based antimicrobial film in inhibiting the growth of an Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris strain was assessed. The proposed active film was obtained by depositing via plasma an Ag-containing polyethylenoxide-like coating on a polyethylene layer. Tests were conducted at 44°C, monitoring the viable cell concentration of the investigated microorganism into 2 different media: acidified malt extract broth and apple juice. Results indicate that the investigated active film successfully inhi… Show more

“…A polyethylene fi lm containing silver-polyethylene oxide reduced Alicyclobacter acidoterrestris in apple juice by approximately 2.5 log over a 4.5 day period. 20 These results indicate that silver-containing fi lms could be effective antimicrobial packaging fi lms. A number of silver compounds are already listed in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Inventory of Effective Food Contact Substance Notifi cations, 21 and it is possible that silver-containing chitosan fi lms can be produced that are effective and deliver silver ions in safe amounts to food surfaces.…”

“…Studies on the antimicrobial effectiveness of polyethylenesilver nanocomposite prepared by several methods have been found in literature such as plasma depositing an Agcontaining polyethylene oxide-like coating on a polyethylene layer (Nobile et al 2004), but little attention has been paid to antimicrobial efficiency of LDPE-silver nanocomposite produced by industrially thermal processing.…”

“…The introduced functional groups can be used to further reactions through covalent or noncovalent linkages with small or large molecules required for particular applications, such as biomolecular immobilization 18 and antimicrobial activity. 19 In this work, the heterogeneous surface modification of polyolefin films such as poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene (PE) was undertaken via the UV-induced photografting of acrylic acid (AA). The goal was to perform a comparative study by means of an efficient, rapid, and economical method suited to yield modified surfaces of different commercial films.…”
