Effect of Additives on the Ionic Reaction Mechanism in the Radiolysis of Methane

Abstract: This work describes the reactions of the ions C2H5+ and CH5+ with C3D8, C4D10, C5D12, as well as the reactions of C2D5+ and CD5+ with C3H8. It is shown that ethyl ions undergo a hydride transfer reaction with all higher hydrocarbons even though they are present at a concentration of only 0.01%. The scavengers NO and O2 react with ethyl ions effectively, provided the relative concentration of the higher hydrocarbons is less than that of the free radical scavengers. A proton-transfer reaction between CH5+ and hi… Show more

“…The mode of C2Hg decomposition may depend on the multiplicity of the CH2 radical, just as the products of CM2 addition to the double bond of butene-2 are a function of methylene multiplicity.23~ 24 Reactions ( 9)-( 12) have been postulated 149 25-27 to account for results obtained under various conditions of photolysis and radiolysis, reactions (lo), (11) or (12) being favoured in accordance with the particular observations. Methylene radicals produced by photolysis of diazomethane were assumed 27 to react via eqn.…”

“…Addition of small amounts of isobutane to ca drastically reduces <I>(C2a) both in the neon and helium resonance experiments (tables 1 and 2). This reduction which is accompanied by a corresponding increase of <I>(C2H6) in the presence or in the absence of O2 is to be accounted for [17] by the removal of the C2Ht ion via the hydride ion transfer reaction Formation of C2H(; in reaction 12 is substantiated by the fact that more than 90 oercent of thp. p. th anp.…”
