Effect of Addition of Mo or V on the Structure and Cutting Performance of AlCrN-Based Coatings

Abstract: This study focuses on a comparative analysis of AlCrXN (X = Mo or V) coatings with the reference AlCrN coating via arc ion plating technique (AIP). The XRD and XPS results showed that the AlCrXN coatings were mainly composed of fcc-(Cr,Al)N solid solution phases. Both the AlCrMoN and AlCrVN coatings exhibited much higher hardness and adhesive strength than the AlCrN coating. The addition of Mo or V decreased the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate, which was due to the formation of lubricant oxides con… Show more

“…(AlCrV)N coatings were deposited by arc using Al 70 Cr 30 and Cr 70 V 30 cathodes [103]. The (AlCrV)N coating had a higher hardness and a lower friction value and wear rate than the (Al 70 Cr 30 )N coating.…”

“…The coating properties of (AlCrX)N can be combined with AlTiN [155,156]. There are some coating systems that contain V in a nitride coating to tailor tribological properties (formation of lubricant oxides), such as (TiV)N [157], (CrV)N and (CrMo)N [103]. The combination with (TiSi)N is focused on high hardness and oxidation stability [158].…”

“…Many studies have looked into AlCrVN coatings to increase the friction-wear properties of materials [ 2 , 10 , 11 ]. Because of the formation of V 2 O 5 oxide during tribological testing at extreme temperatures, the AlCrVN coatings have a low friction coefficient (0.2–0.3) and good wear resistance at high temperatures (700 °C).…”

“…Because of the formation of V 2 O 5 oxide during tribological testing at extreme temperatures, the AlCrVN coatings have a low friction coefficient (0.2–0.3) and good wear resistance at high temperatures (700 °C). The AlCrVN coating greatly increased cutting tool performance while also boosting anti-wear ability due to the high hardness and produced lubricating V 2 O 5 coatings [ 11 , 12 ]. The findings indicate that AlCrVN hard coatings have the potential to improve the wear resistance of cutting tools, forming, mechanical, and weapon parts [ 10 , 11 ].…”
