Effect of adding crumb tire rubber particles on the mechanical properties of DCPD-modified sulfur polymer mortars

Abstract: Sulfur polymer mortars are composite materials in which modified sulfur is the binder while sand and other fillers are used as aggregates. Sulfur-based composite materials are characterized by their high chemical and mechanical properties along with fast setting behavior. However, sulfur modification is essential in order to achieve sulfur mortars with enhanced characteristics. In this study, incorporation of crumb tire rubber in dicyclopentadiene-modified sulfur-based mortars, as some replacement of sand, is … Show more

“…The products obtained from scrap tyres are classified as whole scrap tyres, slit tyres, shredded/chipped, ground and rubber crumb. Rubber crumb particle sizes range between 4.75mm to less than 0.075 mm [9] and are irregularly shaped, torn particles due to the micro-mill process, they are subjected to during the manufacturing process [10][11][12]. The recycling will reduce the waste and contribute to a greener environment.…”

“…Pure sulphur is modified under chemical or physical sulphur crystallization control to prevent this situation (Vlahovic et al, 2011). The additives used in the chemical control of sulphur crystallization can be summarized as dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) (Maraghechi et al, 2011;Shin et al, 2014) and combinations of DCPD, cyclopentadiene and dipentene (Bordoloi and Pierce, 1978;Lin et al, 1995). Sulphur crystallization can be physically prevented by using olefin hydrocarbon polymers and fly ash.…”

“…Experimental studies have also been carried out on the usability of SPCs as road pavement and concrete paving blocks due to their high abrasion resistance (Al-Otaibi et al, 2018). There are also experimental studies in the literature to evaluate waste materials such as fly ash and recycled aggregate (Shin et al, 2014), electrolytic manganese residue (Yang et al, 2014), waste ilmenite mud (Contreras et al, 2013), cement kiln dust (Mohamed and El Gamal, 2011), crumb tire rubber particles (Maraghechi et al, 2011) in SPC.…”
