Effect of acupuncture on lung cancer-related fatigue: study protocol for a multi-center randomized controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundFatigue is one of the primary symptoms in lung cancer, with a prevalence of 88.0% in survivors of cancer, and an even higher prevalence post resection surgery. Effective fatigue control after lung cancer surgery is important for patient recovery and quality of life. Some studies have shown that acupuncture might be effective in treating cancer-related fatigue; however, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of suitable sample size are limited.Method/designThis is a multi-center, patient-blinded RCT. “…Lung cancer is a primary lung tumor with a high incidence rate among middle-aged persons and the maximum death rate in my nation; clinical data suggest that the prevalence of this illness is climbing year by year [ 1 ]. Non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer are the two most frequent types of lung cancer.…”

“…Nowadays, there has been a growing interest in managing fatigue with complementary health approaches. As a part of these approaches, Mind-Body Interventions (MBIs) have recently gained much interest in managing CRF (Gok Metin et al, 2019;Wang et al, 2019;Zetzl et al, 2019). MBIs are a variety of interventions designed to facilitate the mind's capacity to affect physical function (Astin et al, 2003).…”

“…Many studies reported that MBIs were effective for CRF (Gok Metin et al, 2019;Wang et al, 2019;Zetzl et al, 2019), but contradictory findings yielded at the same time (Kieviet-Stijnen et al, 2008;Chandwani et al, 2010;Moran et al, 2019). In addition, some systematic reviews, which summarized the results of the available evidence, provided heterogeneous results, which make it difficult to draw conclusions on the potential effectiveness of MBIs in CRF management (Zeng et al, 2014;Duong, et al 2017).…”

“…In China, acupuncture is a traditional treatment that has been in use for more than two millennia ( 23 ). The application of acupuncture has recently witnessed a revival in cancer-related clinical research, where acupuncture is mainly used for cancer-related pain ( 24 , 25 ), insomnia ( 26 ), psychological symptoms ( 27 ), fatigue ( 28 ), hot flashes ( 29 ), chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy ( 30 ), breast cancer-related lymphedema ( 31 ), dyspnea in lung cancer ( 32 ), radiation-induced xerostomia ( 33 ) and other symptoms related to cancer. With regard to bowel function, acupuncture has shown potential in terms of ameliorating postoperative ileus ( 34 ) and gastroparesis syndrome in patients who undergo abdominal surgery ( 35 ).…”
