Effect of Acid mixtures on the Hydrolysis of Coconut Coir for Recovery of Fermentable Sugars

Abstract: In this study, coconut coir was hydrolysed to produce fermentable sugars using dilute nitric and acetic acid. The hydrolysis process was carried out according to a four variable Box-Behnken design which was used to develop a statistical model to describe the relationship between the concentration of fermentable sugars produced (dependent variable) and the independent variables (time, temperature, nitric acid concentration and acetic acid concentration). Results of analysis of variance (ANOVA) performed to dete… Show more

“…Due to their superior properties and abundance, coir fibers are being used in various applications like fabrication of various composite materials with high mechanical stability 21 and stabilization of soft clay deposits. 22 Several research efforts are devoted towards improving and modifying the properties of natural coir to make it suitable for advanced applications like production of bio-based diesel fuels, 23 composite materials with high specific capacitance, 24 and fermentable sugars. 25 Almost all these efforts focus on utilizing solid components (like cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) through extraction, decomposition, and digestion of coir.…”
