Effect of Abiotic Stress on Onion Yield: A Review

Abstract: Onion (Allium cepa L.) is a spice crop and a valuable economic crop cultivated in a variety of environments around the world. Because of its export demand, it is extremely important in terms of foreign exchange. Drought stress, waterlogging stress, heat stress, cold stress, and salinity stress all have an impact on onion growth, production, and yield in different ways. A lack of water causes low productivity, therefore to increase onion yield, a constant supply of water is needed. Onions are particularly susce… Show more

“…Heat stress can cause significant reductions in crop yield and reduce the synthesis of starch, protein, fiber, and essential mineral contents [109]. Yield reductions up to 50% have been reported in onion (Allium cepa L.) [142], cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) [143], and rice (Oryza sativa L.) [144]. Plant adaptation to heat stress can be summarized with the following strategies:…”

“…The main challenges are the impact of diseases caused by pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria [4,5], as well as the presence of insect pests that affect plant health and bulb quality [6,7]. Moreover, abiotic stress, such as adverse weather conditions and water availability, can negatively influence the growth and development of the onion crop [8,9]. The quality of crops are fundamental aspects to guarantee food safety [10].…”

“…The pathogens of Nicotiana diseases cause extensive damage to tobacco, especially various viral diseases, such as tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), potato virus Y (PVY), cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), among others [19,20]. Abiotic stress, such as heat, cold, drought, waterlogging, and freezing, has caused many productivity reductions [21].…”
