Effect of a toothpaste containing triclosan on dental plaque, gingivitis, and bleeding on probing – an investigation in periodontitis patients over 28 weeks

Abstract: The aim of this double-blind, 28-week study was to evaluate the plaque-inhibitory and antigingivitis efficacy of a fluoride toothpaste containing 0.3% triclosan and essential oil (Dental Kosmetik, Dresden, Germany) in comparison with a control toothpaste. One hundred twenty subjects previously treated for chronic periodontitis were included in the study. At baseline, 8, 18, and 28 weeks, plaque accumulation (PlI) and gingival status (GI) were assessed. Probing pocket depth (PD) and bleeding on probing (BOP) we… Show more

“…When 6-month data were available, independently of the study length, 6-month data were extracted and used (n = 77). When it was not available, 7-month (n = 7) (Garcia-Godoy et al 1990, Svatun et al 1993a,b, Zimmermann et al 1993, Schaeken et al 1996, Kocher et al 2000, Bruhn et al 2002, 9month (n = 1) (Mengel et al 1996), or 12-month (n = 1) (Spets-Happonen et al 1991) data were used.…”

“…The active ingredient in CT, triclosan, is a proved therapeutic agent against gingivitis 20 . Most of the clinical studies with triclosan were conducted for 6 months or longer 21‐24 . However, it has been reported that triclosan's antigingivitis effect can be observed in 6 weeks 20 .…”

“…However, its use may be valuable as an adjunctive therapy for patients with partial compliance to SPT appointments. Using another formulation, Bruhn et al (2002) were not able to demonstrate any advantage for triclosan regarding BOP and probing depth reduction, which are major outcome variables for SPT. At this stage, no recommendation can be concluded for use of specific toothpastes during SPT for periodontitis patients, but the development of new formulations with more SPT studies is needed.…”
