The triterpenoid hydrocarbon squalene, C 30 H 50 , abundantly occurring in nature, is known as a substance with a high anti-tumour activity proven by a number of research studies. A high content of squalene was found mainly in shark liver oil and also in olive oil and amaranth seed oil. Our work was aimed at examining squalene contents in fresh water fish. Altogether 20 fish species were analysed. Squalene was determined in the unsaponifiable matter of muscular and visceral fat by a capillary gas chromatography method using a flame ionisation detector; the analysis of the unsaponifiable matter was augmented by cholesterol assay. The quantity of squalene found in muscular and visceral fat of individual fish averaged hundreds of mg/kg, ranging from 98.0 to 1536.8 mg/kg in muscular fat and from 70.1 to 1803.8 mg/kg in visceral fat. Muscular cholesterol amounted from 0.011% to 0.170% and visceral cholesterol from 0.104% to 0.297%.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of refining steps on the squalene content of some vegetable oils. A comparison has been made between the crude oils and consecutive steps of refining process (neutralization, bleaching, deodorization, winterization) in the amounts of squalene of the oil samples. Among the oils, virgin and refined olive oils contained higher amounts of squalene. A mean of 491.0 ± 15.55 mg/100 g squalene was found in virgin olive oil samples. While appreciable quantities of squalene has been reduced during refining, considerable level of squalene were still present in refined olive oils (290.0 ± 9.89 mg/100 g). The squalene content of crude seed oils varied from 13.8 ± 0.39 mg/100 g to 26.2 ± 0.08 mg/100 g as average. It has been determined that refining process reduced the level of squalene in examined oils. The highest reduction in squalene content of the oils was detected during deodorization. The effect of refining steps on the amount of squalene in vegetable oils was found to be significant (p < 0.05). Olive oil has been considered an important source of squalene, even after it has been refined, compared to seed oils.

Background: Aloe vera is a cactus-like plant that grows in hot, dry regions. Aloe vera has been known and used in traditional medicine and also in the modern world. Aloe vera has some pharmacological actions including wound healing, anti-inflammatory and immunostimulatory effects. We have studied the possible effects of Aloe vera gel on the healing of colonic anastomoses of rats. Material and Methods: In this study, Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Aloe vera group received 2 mL/kg per day Aloe vera, and the control group received the same amount of water. Animals underwent resection and anastomosis of the distal colon. Bursting pressures of anastomoses and hydroxyproline contents of perianastomotic region were determined on the third and seventh days. Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare bursting pressures and hydroxyproline levels between groups. Results: There was no difference between groups in mortality. Mean bursting pressures and mean hydroxyproline levels were lower in the control group than in the Aloe vera group both on the third and seventh days. Conclusion: Aloe vera has multiple pharmacologically active compounds. It stimulates phagocyte formation and its activity induces nitric oxide production, it has angiogenic activity, increases synthesis, maturation and cross-linking of collagen, stimulates cell proliferation, stimulates fibroblast functions and proliferation, inhibits arachidonic acid oxidation, has anti-inflammatory effects, reduces tumour necrosis factor-a levels, and has antioxidant activity. Thus, according to our findings, Aloe vera has positive effects on the colonic anastomotic healing of rats.
