Effect of a High-Intensity Handball-Specific Fatigue Protocol Focused on the Leg Contralateral to the Throwing Arm on Interlimb Asymmetries

Abstract: Janicijevic, D, Pérez-Castilla, A, Miras-Moreno, S, Ortega-Becerra, M, Morenas-Aguilar, MD, Smajla, D, Sarabon, N, and García-Ramos, A. Effect of a high-intensity handball-specific fatigue protocol focused on the leg contralateral to the throwing arm on interlimb asymmetries. J Strength Cond Res 37(7): 1382–1389, 2023—This study aimed to elucidate which countermovement jump (CMJ) variant (unilateral or bilateral) is more sensitive to detect the decrement in kinetic CMJ-derived variables of the leg more activel… Show more

“…Possible asymmetries have been the subject of study, above all, as a way of controlling training [ 10 , 10 , 16 ], as a way of monitoring fatigue [ 17 , 62 , 63 , 64 ], as a tool for reducing the risk of injury [ 16 , 63 , 65 ], and even as a way of evaluating the performance of athletes [ 20 , 22 ]. In this sense, the monitoring of possible asymmetries tends to assist training, especially high-intensity ones, aimed at gaining strength [ 21 , 66 ].…”

“…The diversification of the forms of physical exercise and the modernization of sports equipment and technologies required the adaptation of the training process with an impact on the physical development of the practitioners [12,13]. Studies have shown that perceptual asymmetries are beneficial (as is the case of eye acuity for shooting), as well as the development of some anthropometric dimensions of the upper and lower limbs that are the result of a long process of preparation in relation to the sport practiced and involves mainly unilateral executions in the regime of force, speed and coordination [1,2,14,15]. In these cases, the dominant segment develops asymmetrically compared to the non-dominant one, and this fact, on the one hand, can facilitate the efficiency of some technical exercises, but on the other hand, it can cause the appearance of musculoskeletal disorders and negative influences on mobility, technique, aesthetics and body postures [16,17].…”

“…This could lead to inter-limb asymmetry between the throwing and non-throwing arm. Asymmetries in handball players between dominant and non-dominant sides have been studied for upper and lower limbs [ 23 , 24 ]. However, as commented before, the prevalence of shoulder injuries reached a high prevalence [ 10 , 11 ].…”
