Effect of 0.02% and 0.01% atropine on astigmatism: a two-year clinical trial

Abstract: Background To evaluate the effects of 0.02% and 0.01% atropine eye drops on ocular and corneal astigmatism over 2 years. Methods A prospective clinic-controlled trail. The cohort study assessed 400 myopic children and divided them into three groups: 138 and 142 children were randomized to use either 0.02% or 0.01% atropine eye drops, respectively. They wore single-vision (SV) spectacles, with one drop of atropine applied to both eyes once nightly. … Show more

“… 98 , 119 Nonetheless, appropriate controls were selected for the comparison group in most studies, and in the case of ortho-k and rigid corneal lens use, which cannot be easily masked, single-vision spectacles (SVSs) were used as controls. 107 However, some atropine studies 110 , 115 and one SCL study 105 used a SVS control (no drops), and thus participants would not have been masked and compliance potentially altered. In addition, many studies made no attempt at a true sham for their control group, 74 , 82 , 113 , 120 , 125 thus increasing the potential for bias.…”

“…Details of the methods of preparation 0.01% atropine have been published elsewhere and are brie y described here [14,27]. The 0.01% atropine eye drops (3 mL sealed bottle, pH = 5.4-5.6, storage at 15-25°C, discarded eye drops after the bottle was opened for 1 month) were prepared by dissolving atropine sulfate powder (Shaoxing Minsheng Medical Co., Ltd., Zhejiang, China) with normal saline under sterile conditions and added preservative (0.3 mg/mL ethylparaben).…”

“…The degree of myopia was expressed as the SER. Using Thibos vector analysis (16)(17)(18) calculated ocular and corneal astigmatism(minimum-maximum keratometry), which were split into its power vector components, J0 (with-the-rule astigmatism) and J45 (oblique). The ocular and corneal astigmatic components are denoted as OJ0, OJ45 and CJ0, CJ45, respectively. A non-contact partial coherence interferometer (IOLMaster-500, Carl Zeiss, Germany) was used for biometric measurements (AL, ACD, and corneal curvature) after cycloplegia.…”
