Effect and mechanism of Salicornia bigelovii Torr. plant salt on blood pressure in SD rats

Abstract: In this paper, the effect and mechanism of Salicornia bigelovii Torr. plant salt (SPS) on blood pressure in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were investigated. The results showed that the edible salt induced hypertension, but the SPS did not. Organ indices and Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining analysis indicated that SPS had a protective effect on the kidney and liver. In comparison with the edible salt-treated group, nitric oxide (NO) content, angiotensin-II (Ang-II) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels in the serum of the S… Show more

“…In another interesting study, Salicornia bigelovii salt was discovered to prevent hypertensive effect, normally associated with NaCl. Ameliorative effect on kidney and liver was established which correlated to lower serum creatinine level (Zhang et al 2015 ). Further, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity increased while malondialdehyde (MDA) content decreased, suggesting beneficial effect on antioxidant profile of the body (Zhang et al 2015 ).…”

The overall food value of Salicornia has got a boost from the phytochemical profiling studies that have unveiled an array of nutritive components, as discussed below.…”

“…Salicornia is characterized by a high content of minerals and high Vitamin C, especially at a later growth stage, which in combination with Zn, Mg, and Mn make it a good candidate to boost the immunity system (unpublished data). Salicornia has also a good antioxidant profile, anti-aging properties, and fertility-boosting effects (Zhang et al 2015). Overall, the vision is to…”

“…An immunomodulatory polysaccharide was isolated from S. herbacea [12,13]. An aliorative effect on the kidneys and liver was found, which correlated with a decrease in serum creatinine [14]. In addition, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase increased, and the content of malonic dialdehyde (MDA) decreased, indicating a beneficial effect of this plant on the antioxidant profile of the body [14].…”
