Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the bacteria that play a major role in the caries process. It is recommended to use cavity cleanser to clean and disinfect caries cavities post-preparation. However, the currently used cavity cleansers, 2% chlorhexidine digluconate and sodium hypochlorite, have limitations. Thus, exploring natural alternatives, like potato peel, as a cavity cleanser material is necessary. This study aims to determine the antibacterial effectiveness of the ethanol extract of potato peel (S. tuberosum L.) on the growth of L. acidophilus. The method used was true experimental laboratories with a post-test-only control group design and broth dilution. The samples were divided into 8 groups, including 6 treatment groups with varying concentrations of extract (100%; 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; and 3.125%), positive control, and negative control. Each group was repeated 4 times. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined by observing solution turbidity in the tubes which began to appear clear after 24 hours of incubation, while the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was determined by the absence of bacteria that grew on media after being given the test solution and incubated for 24 hours. The MIC of potato peel ethanol extract on the growth of L. acidophilus could not be determined, while the MBC was at a concentration of 50%. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that concentration levels had a significant difference in the average number of L. acidophilus colonies. The ethanol extract of potato peel (S. tuberosum L.) has antibacterial effectiveness against the growth of L. acidophilus.

Infeksi ialah salah satu penyakit yang dapat terjangkit kepada manusia dimana hingga saat ini masih harus sungguh-sungguh untuk diselesaikan. Infeksi bakteri staphylococcus aureus jadi suatu permasalahan yang benar-benar menjadi perhatian dikarenakan peningkatan resistensi bakteri pada bermacam-macam antibiotik. Dengan meluasnya resisten bakteri terhadap obat-obatan yang ada maka harus dilakukan pendorongan lebih lanjut tentang pentingnya upaya untuk menciptakan alternatif yang terbaru dengan cara melakukan pemberian obat-obatan pencegahan penyakit infeksi menggunakan bahan baku dari alam. Metode penelitian menggunakan data sekunder yang diambil dari studi literatur, yang dianalisis dari data terkait efektivitas antibakteri tanaman obat-obatan. Teknik pengumpulan data pada penilitian ini berupa review dari jurnal ilmiah, junal nasional dan internasional yang telah terpublikasi. Hasil yang didapatkan dari beberapa literature penelitian yang efektif terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri staphylococcus aureus ialah daun kelor. Dimana pada konsentrasi rendah daun kelor memberikan diameter daerah hambatan pertumbuhan bakteri yang begitu besar dan jika konsentrasi yang diberikan diperbesar maka akan semakin besar pula diameter daerah hambatan bakteri yang dihasilkan. Hal ini pula didukung dari beberapa penelitian sebelumnya yang sudah banyak dilakukan oleh peneliti bahwa daun kelor memiliki aktivitas antibakteri terhadap bakteri patogen resisten antibiotik terutaman pada bakteri staphylococcus aureus serta daun kelor mengandung beberapa senyawa metabolit sekunder yang aktif mencegah perkembangan bakteri yaitu senyawa flavonoid, saponin dan tannin.

Typhoid fever is a chronic disease caused by S. typhi bacterium. This disease can be transmitted via contaminated water or food, and close contact with an infected person. The symptomps of typhoid fever include high fever, stomach pain, headache, and constipation. Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus L.) leaves extract contain active compounds with antibacterial activity. This research aims to determine the inhibitory activity of jackfruit leaves extract against S. typhi. Jackfruit leaves were extracted by maceration using 70% ethanol as solvent. After that, organoleptic test, ethanol-free test and phytochemical screening of extract were carried out. Inhibitory activity of extract was conducted using well diffusion method, followed by determination of MIC and MBC. The results showed that jackfruit leaves extract contained flavonoid, tannins, saponin, and triterpenoid. Inhbitory activity of extract was found at concentration 20% (5.24 mm), 40% (6.78 mm), and concentration 60% (8.08 mm). The MIC value of extract was 12.5%. while the MBC could not be found. According to the results, ethanol extract of jackfruit leaves (70%) have potential compounds to inhibit the growth of S. typhi
