Efeito leishmanicida in vitro de Stachytarpheta cayennensis (Rich.) Vahl (Verbenaceae)

Abstract: RESUMO:ABSTRACT: "In vitro leishmanicidal effect of Stachytarpheta cayennensis (Rich.) Vahl (Verbenaceae)". Leishmanicidal activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of Stachytarpheta cayennensis, species that is usually employed in ulcers caused by Leishmania, was evaluated in vitro using Leishmania braziliensis and L. amazonensis promastigotes forms. The hydroalcoholic extract was prepared from dried leaves and used in L. amazonensis and L. braziliensis promastigotes cultures at concentrations of 500 to 32.5 g/m… Show more

“…In conclusion, the coexisting presence in S. cayennensis of anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcerogenic (Penido et al, 2004), antinociceptive (Schapoval et al, 1998), leishmanicidal (Moreira et al, 2007), antibacterial and antioxidant properties, without phototoxicity, suggest that this plant may provide a useful co-adjuvant strategy for use in folk medicine. Betulinic acid was first identified at the Stachytarpheta genus.…”

“…Its leaves and roots are used in folk medicine in Brazil and other countries encompassing the Amazon rainforest to treat inflammation, varicose ulcers, fever, hepatic and renal disorders, hypertension and diabetes (Penido et al, 2006;Schapoval et al, 1998). Recently the anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, gastroprotective and Leishmanicidal properties of ethanolic extracts were assessed (Moreira et al, 2007;Penido et al, 2006;Schapoval et al, 1998).…”

“…The petrol ether/ ethyl acetate extract showed only low activity at 50 μg/ml (Jenett-Siems et al, 1999). In addition, the hydroalcoholic extract of S. cayennensis inhibits the growing of Leishmania promastigotes forms in vitro accounting for the folk use of this vegetal in skin ulcers caused by Leishmania (Moreira et al, 2007).…”

“…Além dessas, análises bioquímicas recentes atestam as propriedades de Lantana camara L. como repelente de mosquitos do gênero Aedes e de Stachytarpheta cayennensis (Rich) Vahl. como leishmanicida (Dua et al 2003;Moreira et al 2007).…”
