Rose is a plant of high nutritional requirement, susceptible to powdery mildew disease caused by fungus Oidium leucoconium, which causes leaf fall and losses in flower production. The objective of this study was to evaluate powdery mildew severity in rose cultivar ‘Grand Gala’ in response to organic fertilization and the application of alternative products to disease control. The first experiment was set in a factorial arrangement, with 5 alternative products: spraying with water as a control (PA), lime sulfur (CS), neem oil (ON), mixture of sodium bicarbonate and canola oil (BC) and coffee pyroligneous acid (APC) and 2 organic fertilizers: chicken manure (EA) and biofertilizer based on banana stalk (B). Disease severity was assessed at 0, 15, 30 and 45 days after the treatments. In the second experiment, asymptomatic leaves or with different powdery mildew severity levels were sprayed only once with the same alternative products mentioned above. Severity was assessed at 0, 7 and 14 days. The organic fertilizations did not influence the reduction in powdery mildew severity in rose. At 45 days, APC yielded a greater reduction in disease severity (81.6%), followed by treatments based on BC, ON and CS. Greater reduction in disease severity in experiment 2 occurred in the treatments of BC and CS, followed by APC. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that APC and the BC have the potential to control rose powdery mildew in an organic cultivation system.

Rhodotorula genus comprises yeasts from Sporidiobolaceae family. Considered as non-pathogenic until the last two decades, different species of Rhodotorula are emerging as pathogens in humans, with R. mucilaginosa being the most commonly involved in infections, ranging from simpler clinical conditions such as skin manifestations to more severe cases such as meningitis and endocarditis. The major facilitating agents for the emergence of these infections are invasive procedures such as catheter implants. The primary drugs of choice used to treat these infections are amphotericin B and fluconazole. However, some strains of this yeast show different degrees of resistance to these substances, thus justifying the search for new therapeutic agents. Considering this, the present study aims the investigation of the antifungal activity of the essential oils of Cinnamomum cassia (cinnamon), Syzygium aromaticum (clove) and Myristica fragrans (nutmeg) against clinical isolates of R. mucilaginosa. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and characterized by GC-MS. The investigation of the antifungal action activity was performed by the agar disc-diffusion test followed by the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) determination. All the essential oils were species present their oil characterized by the presence of phenylpropanoids, with eugenol (77.6 to 94.4%) as the main compound of clove and E-cinnamaldehyde (90.4 to 100%) of cinnamon. Nutmeg oil is characterized by the presence of showed as main compounds the myristicin (1.8 a 12.8%) and elemicin (4.3 a 11.1%) phenylpropanoids, besides sabinene (28.2 to 44.4%) and terpinen-4-ol (16.0 to 19.5%) monoterpenes. In the investigation of antifungal activity, all the oils showed potential action against clinical isolates of R. mucilaginosa, with MICs ranging from 8 to 500 µg/mL. The results demonstrate that these oils are promising candidates in the search for new anti-Rhodotorula agents, enabling the treatment of aforementioned infections.

Resumo O setor de bebidas alcoólicas apresenta relevância econômica no Brasil, com destaque para o crescimento do consumo de licores à base de frutas, o que impulsiona o processamento de frutas pouco exploradas tecnologicamente pela agroindústria, como a romã. O objetivo deste estudo foi elaborar um licor à base de romã e canela e avaliar sua qualidade físico-química e microbiológica. O licor foi avaliado quanto aos parâmetros físico-químicos como pH, acidez, densidade, teor alcoólico, cinzas, extrato seco, sólidos solúveis, açucares (redutores, não redutores e totais) e compostos fenólicos totais; e microbiológicos quanto a presença de Salmonella spp., coliformes, bolores e leveduras. O licor apresentou boa qualidade devido aos valores satisfatórios de pH (4,5), acidez (16,67 meq/L), densidade (1,09 g/mL), teor alcoólico (24 % v/v), cinzas (0,03 %), extrato seco (27,94 g/L), sólidos solúveis totais (30,40 °Brix), açúcares totais (50,20 %), açúcares redutores (13,13 %), açucares não redutor (35,21 %) e compostos fenólicos totais (1041 mg GAE/L). Os resultados da análise microbiológica estão de acordo ao estabelecido pela legislação, o que indica as boas condições sanitárias durante a fabricação da bebida devido a ausência de Salmonella spp., coliformes, bolores e leveduras.
